HAWK - Homing All the Way Killer
the all time best akronym of the US Army - in my eyes...
A medium range, surface to air missile - it used a semi active radar homing as a guidance system, so the missile was a passive detector of a radar signal, reflected off the target. The radar signal came from an external source, not the missile itself. So the "homing" took place from launching to impact on the target - aircraft flying at medium and low altitude...
so that is what the towers are for... the mobile radar units were up there, but they also could be brought down and be transprted to anywhere tactical needed... the engines of the elevators were in those little cabins besides the towers...
A typical symbol of the cold war - service was hard due to manouvres and execises and the cold war threat of course...
soon, the servicemen found another meaning of HAWK:
Holiday And Weekend Killer
